After taking a few days to adjust to European time and the long-haul flight back from Thailand, I looked at compiling a medal table for the inaugural World Mountain and Trail Running Championships(WMTRC).
Championships Overview
The championships were a collaboration between the World Mountain Running Association, The International Trail Running Association and the International Ultra Running Association. Overseen and supported by the Global governing body World Athletics.
The vision of the joint Championships to showcase and help development of the various disciplines had been in the planning for over three years. The Pandemic had twice led to its postponement.
Ten races were staged over three days, with 60 medals awarded in overall. 30 individual medals and 30 team medals
Uganda Top the WMTRC medal table in Thailand.
Uganda led the medal table due to their superior Gold medal count. Interestingly all Uganda’s medals came in the Mountain races, where they proved dominant in both Men’s and Women’s up-and-down races and the Junior up-and-down races.
USA pip Great Britain and Northern Ireland for second
Because of their superior gold medal count, 4 to 2, USA edged GB & NI for second, although the British gained more overall medals. Both nations achieved there rewards across the Mountain and Trail races in individual and team categories.
European depth
Although GB & NI were the leading European team, rounding out placings 4th, 5th and 6th were their traditional rivals The Italians, The French and The Spanish, who, like Britain, secured medals across all the disciplines.
In seventh, the Swiss team showed their traditional Mountain running pedigree.
A Global spread of medals at WMTRC Thailand
In total, 13 nations earned medals. Kenya from Africa, and more European countries, Norway, Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria and Romania also featuring.
Three continents, Africa, North America and Europe, were represented in the medal table.
Teams also competed in the championships from South America, Asia and Oceania.
