GB Women’s 50km Rankings 2023
Carla Molinaro winning the IAU World 50km Championships in Hyderabad in November was the Womens’s GB Highlight for 50km running in 2023. Her time of 3:18:22, was run in difficult conditions in India with high humidity and temperatures touching 30 degrees centigrade. Nevertheless, it places her 6th on the GB women’s All-time listing.
Sarah Webster, who topped the women’s 100km rankings, recorded the 2nd and 3rd best times of the year, 3:20:07 when securing the individual bronze medal in Hyderabad and 3:20:22 when recording a qualifying time for the championships in Romania in May. Anna Bracegirdle, with 3:20:37 and Rachel Hopkinson, 3:20:47, ran the 4th and 5th best times of the year, also in Hyderabad.
Global Perspective
Ethiopian Emane Seifu Hayele ran 3:00:30 at Gqeberha in South Africa in February, just falling short of Des Linden’s current recognised World Record of 2:59:54. The South African race, with strong financial support, attracts the top South Africans and others, along with incentives for fast times. Seven of the top ten women’s times for 2023, were recorded in this race.

GB Men’s 50km Rankings 2023
UPDATED 29:12:2023
UPDATED 29:12:2023
Indebted to James Ray ( see comments below) for pointing out Alex Milne ran 2:51:25 on 3rd December 2023 at Chichester . One second faster than Ollie Garrod’s time at the same venue earlier in the year. He consequently tops the rankings by one second ahead of Ollie for 2023. Alex now moves to 3rd on the GB all time Road 50km lists behind Dan Nash’s 2:49:01 and Paul Martelletti’s 2:50:11. Former Olympic marathoner Geoff Norman, 2:48:06 and Ultra pioneer Don Ritchie 2:50:30 still have the 2 fastest track performances at 50km on record, set in 1979 and 1980 respectively.
If Carla Molinaro was the standout female, Ollie Garrod’s superb 2:51:26 at Chichester in February topping the men’s rankings was arguably the best male performance. That time moves him to 3rd on the All-Time GB road rankings. Matt Dickinson, with 2:52:22, recorded the second fastest GB time for the year, also at Chichester in their September race. Filling 3rd, 5th and 6th were Britain’s Bronze medal-winning team from the IAU World Championships in Hyderabad. Will Mycroft with 2:55:53, Andrew Davies 2:57:14 and Andrew Heyes 2:58:39. Mycroft’s performance with 9th place at the championship, in what was a strong mens field deserves a special mention.
Scottish Ex-Pat Nikki Johnstone ran a new Scottish Road record of 2:56:21 in Germany in February to fill 4th place, though the legendary Don Ritchie has several superior track times!
The conditions in Hyderabad probably affecting times.
Global Perspective
Like the Women’s global rankings, the men’s are also dominated by the Gqeberha race in South Africa, where Tete Morina Dijana just fell short of CJ Albertson’s World record, 2:38:43, recording 2:39:04. His compatriot Onalena Willian Khonkhobe became only the 3rd man to go under 2 hours 40 minutes recording 2:39:41. Fourteen of the top 20 fastest times for 2023, were recorded in the Gqeberha race.
