The 2025 Comrades Marathon in South Africa has seen victories for the home nations Tete Dijana and Gerda Steyn.

This year’s event was run on the 89km down course from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Mens Race

Dijana was always in the leading group, running out the winner in 5 hours 25 Minutes and 28 seconds, beating the 2024 winner, Dutchman Piet Wiersma, into second place by just 5 seconds.

Nikolai Volkov, from Russia, running as an  Authorised Neutral Athlete (ANA) came through strongly in the closing kilometres to take third in5:29:42

GB 100km and 50km International Alex Milne secured a magnificent 6th place finishing in 5:34:08. Adopting his usual“run your own race approach,” he was in over 50th position in the early stages, gradually moving through as the race progressed. He improved on his 9th pace on the up course in 2024.

In the women’s race, Zambia’s Elizabeth Mukoloma was the early leader, leading by two minutes at Cato Ridge(30.5 KM), with Steyn happy staying in the chasing pack. Gradually, Muloloma faded, and by Botha’s Hill around 50 Km, Steyn was in the lead by 4 minutes from the previous winner, Russian Authorised Neutral Athlete Alexandra Morozova.

Steyn was never headed and went on to win in 5:51:19, recording her 4th Comrades victory. Morozova, the 2022 winner took second in 5:55:52, with Kenya’s Shelmisth Muriuki,3rd in 6:07:56

Great Britain’s Carla Molinaro maintained her successful Comrades streak, finishing 6th in 6:13:03. The 2023 world 50km champion was third in 2023 and 4th last year.  Fellow GB international Melissah Gibson took 10th place, in 6:19:59, improving on her 14th place from 2024, with Naomi Mitchell, running her first Comrades, in 15th with 6:32:10.

Ireland’s Caitriona Jennings, 3rd in the 2019 race, finished in 8th place in 6:16:42, her 4th top ten placing.

It was the 98th running of the race, with over 22,000 entries from 80 countries.

One notable British mention. As I write this Edinburgh’s John Sneddon, of Hunter’s Bog Trotters, is on course to complete his 31st Comrades race—quite a feat of “year “on year consistent fitness.
